About Underline

Underline starts with our people.

At Underline, we've rapidly built a culture around ownership, trust, community, and innovation. Underline is dedicated to cultivating a growth environment where people feel valued, work with a purpose of mission, are personally rewarded, and are professionally challenged.

Are you ready to join this team and transform American communities?

Underline was founded in 2019 with a singular mission: to ensure the vibrancy of our nation through building intelligent community infrastructure in a socially equitable manner. We work with American communities to design, finance, and construct open access fiber-optic networks. These networks are critical to secure internet access that’s fast, affordable, and fair. As open access networks, this infrastructure is also the essential foundation for distributed healthcare services, new wireless solutions, and resilient infrastructure including modernized water systems and responsible energy creation. Our first two projects are in Colorado Springs and Fountain, Colorado.

About this Position

We're looking for a Senior Data & Analytics Engineer to join our Architecture team and work across the entire company—software engineering, revenue, finance, and operations. This isn't a role where the hard problems are already solved and you're maintaining someone else's system. You'll be building core data infrastructure from a still-early stage, while also owning and improving what's already running.

You’ll  be responsible for ingesting new data sources, creating data models, and otherwise building, maintaining, and optimizing the capabilities of our data processing systems and analytical pipelines. You’ll report to Jason White, our Principal Architect, and partner directly with teams across the company to understand what data they need, get it to them reliably, and build the pipelines and models that make that possible at scale.

Does this sound like you?

  • You can operate without a lot of structure—you're comfortable defining the right approach when there isn't already a playbook
  • You take ownership seriously—when something's broken or missing, you don't wait to be asked
  • You move fluidly between building something new and fixing something that already exists, and you don't consider one more "real" work than the other
  • You communicate clearly with both engineers and non-technical stakeholders
  • You want to be hands-on with infrastructure that has real, physical stakes— this is data work in service of something being built in the ground, not just in the cloud
  • You have an entrepreneurial spirit— you have no problem getting your hands dirty and have an intense ability to learn quickly and from others
  • You're energized by ambiguity rather than drained by it— this team is still defining and evolving its own systems as it goes

What you'd be doing:

  • Design, build, and maintain the data pipelines, models, and infrastructure that the rest of the company depends on, and create a roadmap to future state architecture
  • Take ownership of data engineering projects end to end—from sourcing and ingestion through transformation, modeling, presentation, and production delivery
  • Diagnose and fix issues in existing pipelines and data models, and make the judgment call on when to patch versus rebuild
  • Partner directly with teams across Underline  to understand their data needs and translate them into reliable systems
  • Identify where our data infrastructure has gaps or is being outgrown, and bring forward the case for what to build next
  • Set and raise the bar for data engineering practices as the team and company scale

Experience we require:

  • 5+ years of data engineering experience, with a track record of owning projects end to end
  • Strong SQL and Python, including data-focused Python packages
  • Production experience with a modern data stack — data repositories such as relational (postgres), document-oriented, and key-value stores; data pipeline orchestration (e.g., Airflow, Prefect, Dagster); a transformation layer (e.g., dbt); a cloud data warehouse (e.g., Redshift, Snowflake, BigQuery); and business intelligence (e.g. Metabase, Tableau)
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as  creating data visualizations such as charts, graphs, and histograms
  • Experience with data governance processes
  • Comfort working in both build and maintenance modes—you've inherited systems you didn't design, and you've designed systems from scratch
  • Comfortable with AI-assisted development and agentic workflows
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS preferred), containerization (Docker), and container orchestration (Kubernetes)
  • Working knowledge of Git and standard version control practices
  • Experience developing for Linux environments, and familiarity with the Linux and MacOS commandline

Bonus points:

  • Experience at an early-stage or scaling startup, particularly one still building core infrastructure
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform)
  • Experience building data quality testing frameworks and observability practices
