About Underline

Underline starts with our people.

At Underline, we've rapidly built a culture around ownership, trust, community, and innovation. Underline is dedicated to cultivating a growth environment where people feel valued, work with a purpose of mission, are personally rewarded, and are professionally challenged.

Are you ready to join this team and transform American communities?

Underline was founded in 2019 with a singular mission: to ensure the vibrancy of our nation through building intelligent community infrastructure in a socially equitable manner. We work with American communities to design, finance, and construct open access fiber-optic networks. These networks are critical to secure internet access that’s fast, affordable, and fair. As open access networks, this infrastructure is also the essential foundation for distributed healthcare services, new wireless solutions, and resilient infrastructure including modernized water systems and responsible energy creation. Our first two projects are in Colorado Springs and Fountain, Colorado.

About this Position

We are looking for a full-time data scientist to join our data team and bring technical excellence, thought leadership, and problem solving skills to support Underline’s mission. You’ll work closely with partners across business and engineering teams as we weave data science into our company processes—solving a growing and diverse list of challenges along the way.

On a given day you might be working with our marketing team to establish KPIs for a new initiative, collaborating with our product team to build a customer segmentation analysis, prototyping a neural network to parse satellite imagery for our network design team, or quantifying & visualizing the extent of the digital divide in a community for presentation to their city council. We’re expanding a suite of methods across different problem domains, actively building out our data infrastructure, and starting to productionize our proofs of concept.

If you’re excited about prototyping new methods to tackle unanswered questions and unsolved problems, building new systems in a fast-paced environment, and using your data chops to revolutionize our country’s infrastructure, we want you on our team!

Spend your time helping us connect America, one community at a time.

Does this sound like you?

  • You have an entrepreneurial spirit— you have no problem getting your hands dirty and have an intense ability to learn quickly and from others
  • You are detail-oriented and able to juggle and execute on multiple tasks and projects in sometimes a nebulous and fluid work environment
  • You enjoy working as part of a collaborative team
  • You have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • You are a true believer in the social, economic, and environmental benefits of bringing intelligent infrastructure to communities across the country

What you'd be doing:

We know there’s a ton of variance in what companies call “data scientists,” and even greater variety in data scientists’ skill sets and backgrounds. We’ll be up front— we’re at a stage where we need people who can wear multiple hats and hop in wherever needed.  We’ve got some super interesting R&D planned, but we also must ensure data fundamentals are in place: reliable metrics and KPI tracking, analytics & reporting, etc.  Generally, the responsibilities for this role will be to:

  • Devise analytical approaches, models, algorithms, and other methods to explore datasets, extract insights, and produce research for different stakeholders
  • Build data products and processes for community assessment, network design, and other domains & projects as needed
  • Work in conjunction with different business functions and our data & software engineers to build pipelines to ingest, transform, and analyze new sources of data
  • Work across functions to develop experiments and other ways to test hypotheses
  • Write SQL to quantify KPIs and perform ad hoc analysis
  • Identify opportunities to prototype new data methods, tools, and approaches that create value and otherwise address company needs

Experience we require:

  • 2-4+ years experience in data science, data analytics, or data engineering
  • Proficiency in SQL and Python, particularly data-related Python packages
  • Strong analytical and statistical reasoning skills with the ability to collect, organize, visualize, and otherwise extract insights from data with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Working knowledge of modeling and machine learning approaches such as regression, classification, and clustering and understanding of tradeoffs and performance evaluation
  • Track record of owning data science projects end to end— from sourcing and transforming data, through analysis & modeling, to delivering data products in production or as polished analysis that informs decision makers
  • Quantitative bachelor’s degree in fields such as statistics, applied math, computer science, engineering, or economics, or otherwise equivalent work experience
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS
  • Experience developing applications for Linux
  • Working knowledge of source control systems, preferably Git

Bonus points:

  • Graduate degree in fields such as statistics, applied math, computer science, engineering, or economics
  • Experience with computer vision techniques and deep learning, particularly on satellite imagery
  • Experience with optimization techniques, particularly on graphs
  • Experience with product and marketing analytics and designing and analyzing experiments
  • Experience with DAG-based data pipeline systems such as Airflow and dbt
  • Experience with setting up KPIs and other pipelines for metrics tracking and business intelligence at an early stage startup
